I’ve spent many years a systems engineer, systems administrator, and technical support, and I’ve probably seen all the “stupid user tricks” that get people in trouble, expose their data and systems, and are just not common sense.

Now, I’ve been retired from that life for quite awhile but I still build websites, and own 7 safelists. I see many of my members submitting the raw (uncloaked) target URL’s on their ads.

First, there are unscrupulous marketers out there that literally “hijack” your sales by simply substituting THEIR affiliate ID for yours. Easy to do. By using a URL cloaker like TinyURL , Viral URL , or even Google Cloaker , you are hiding your true affiliate ID so it cannot easily be stolen.

Other than link protection, the next biggest advantage of using link cloakers is to show you the statistics for your ads. A cloaker like ViralURL (free) gives not only clicks, but also WHERE your clicks have originated. This helps you determine the effectiveness of your ads, and make adjustments (look up Split Testing).

TinyURL and Google Cloaker

TinyURL and Google Cloaker are free, and do provide protection from stealing your sales, but I prefer the statistics and flexibility with ViralURL.

ViralURL

My recommendation is for ViralURL, especially if you take an upgrade. The statistics are really great, and you can change the original URL and still retain the cloaked URL – that way you don’t have to hunt down the hundreds of places you might have used that cloaked URL if someone releases a new version of your squeeze page and changes the URL.

Another advantage of Viral URL is the mailer. The target audience with ViralURL members is heavily weighed to Internet Marketing, and the stats I see from the ViralURL mailer are pretty decent.

I have to admit, I’ve used Microsoft Office extensively over the years, and at one time, I was considered quite the expert. Around 1989, I took our corporation kicking and screaming out of the character-based PC applications of the DOS/WordPerfect/Lotus platform, into the graphical Microsoft Windows/Word/Excel world. That’s right. It was my project and network design that placed the first 2600 Windows PC’s into our company with a Sales Force Automation program.

It was a hard transition, and I even had to sit with some of the veteran employees and teach them how to use a mouse. I want to tell you, that it was a violation of company policy to have games installed on company computers, but I got special dispensation. The reason that the games that came pre-installed with Windows at the time were intentionally left on our “install image” was so that our users could play those games to get used to using a mouse rather than “keyboard shortcut” commands.

We’ve come a long way.

The major competition at the time struggled to get their products “Windows Ready”, and in the meantime, the kids in Redmond made so many dependencies and hooks into the Windows operating system that it took a long time for those competitors to get it right.

I still believe that if the importance of a task borders on mission critical, if there are specific workgroup sharing and collaboration requirements, security, or automation requirements, then those premium products are warranted.

I’m not saying DON’T use them, but I am saying that you should use the appropriate tools for the job.

The automation work I did with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Visio absolutely required the premium tools in Microsoft Office.

As with anything, you need to weigh the benefits before making any technology commitment.

Google Drive is more than just cloud storage. Besides the obscene amount of space you get, there are so many things that are closely integrated (at least on the Browser interface).

• It is a massive cloud storage place where you can put your files or photos
• Applications closely integrated are Docs, Sheet, and Slides
• Also Google Forms, Drawings and Maps
• You can upload files from your computer
• You can download one file or multiple files or folders at one time
• You can share your files with others.
• You can restrict access: view only, edit, or comment
• You can give someone a shareable link to a file
• You can upload files from Microsoft Office applications and use them in their native format, or convert them to Google applications format with just a click.

Google DOCS

This is a pretty sophisticated full featured word processor that competes with most commercial versions on the market. Would I venture into writing the great American novel, or critically important documents with Google Docs? Probably not.

Most people only use 10% of the capability of these products, and in a Corporate environment, I would recommend Microsoft Office – Word, but for home-business use, GO FOR IT with Google Docs.

Document format portability is seamless, and the advantage of multiple platform availability for full editing, sharing, and synching makes this a great choice.

Google SHEETS

Again, since most people use only the most basic spreadsheet functions, SHEET is a perfectly satisfactory program. I personally am an Excel Power User (I had a website and blog, ExcelVBAWizard.com for years). But even with simple automation (the SHEETS scripting language is NOT compatible with MS Excel VBA), unless you have a specific requirement that demands MS Excel, I strongly recommend SHEETS.

Google SLIDES

I have only used this to display MS PowerPoint presentations, but again, for basic presentation needs, SLIDES works great.

Tools

The particular tools you use to create the To-Do List do not matter,
as long as you USE THEM! Simple is better. Free is good. I use the
Tasks List in GMAIL. I “pin” my email tab in my browser so it is
always to the left of my browser window. I also “pin” my task list
and calendar. These are essential tools I use . I’m a listmaker.
